Janusz Tworek is an architect. He creates collages, drawings, and dry pastels. oil paintings, stained glass ceramics and photographs. For Janusz Tworek, art is a way of expressing the attitude towards reality. His paintings and drawings flow from the zone of instinct, operating beyond intellectual considerations. He believes that this makes them the most authentic representation of reality. His painting is spontaneous, resulting from the emotions he experiences. Most often, the ideas that constitute the intellectual basis of what I want to paint change under the influence of the emotions of the moment. Hence his motto: "Emotions are everything - everything is an emotion." Despite the age of 67, he is still studying. He doesn't wonder whether he has a "style" of painting. He tries to paint as best he can. And this changes thanks to new experiences. When he finishes the painting, he feels a kind of relief and thinks about what will happen next. It seems to him that it is very important to return to the roots of the role of art in human life. That is why it is so important to make artists themselves aware of the important social role they play. After all, they create things that have been an indicator of the level of maturity of every community for centuries. The need to experience art has been an innate human need since the dawn of time.
What are the primary concepts and focus of your art and How do these ideas relate to your medium, and creative process itself?
For me, art is a way of expressing my attitude towards reality. My paintings, drawings, collages and pastels flow from the zone of instinct, operating beyond intellectual considerations. Reality for me is never as I actually see it, but as I feel it. I believe that thanks to this, what I do most authentically presents my view of life. My work is spontaneous, resulting from the emotions I experience. Most often, the ideas that constitute the intellectual basis of what I want to paint change under the influence of the emotions of the moment. Hence my motto: "Emotions are everything - everything is an emotion." The choice of medium depends solely on the moment and irrational instinctive need.
Which artists are you inspired and influenced by?
My absolute guru is Pablo Picasso. The Spaniards rightly call him a creator. His versatile creative output reached far beyond all boundaries. In my opinion, he is the greatest artist of the 20th and, as it turns out, of the 21st century. His work can be an inspiration for many generations of artists. I attended the MADS exhibition "Orizzonti Trasversali". The curator of the exhibition, Marina Maggiore, summed up my works with a significant statement by Pablo Picasso - I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them. This sentence became my second creative motto. However, I have no idea who I can influence. I only hope that for some recipients what I create may have some significance in their view of reality.
Which of your works stands out as a highlight, a favorite, or a significant point in your creative growth and development? and why?
I don't have any work that I would particularly highlight. All my works are the result of continuous learning. Despite my 67 years of age, I am still learning and, I hope, developing creatively. Unfortunately, I still see a lot of things that I need to improve
What is your artist message, what do you wish to communicate to the viewer?
First of all, I would like to arouse the desire to see what is hidden under what we see with our eyes.
What memorable reactions have you had to your work?
Every reaction ending with a long, insightful discussion is unforgettable for me. This happened several times.
What is the last exhibition you saw that made an impression on you and why?
I was at an exhibition of prints and drawings by Pablo Picasso. As usual when encountering this artist's works, I was completely stunned. The essence of creativity.
Describe your studio/work space in three adjectives.
Disorder. Chaos. Music.
How does the studio environment influence the way you work?
Positively or negatively. Depending on your mood.
What kind of atmosphere do you prefer when you work? Do you listen to music or podcasts, or do you prefer silence? Why?
I always listen to music. Basically, all my life I have listened and still listen to music very often. The music is extremely invigorating and inspiring.
Can you share any info about your current works in progress, and share a picture of any current work in progress at the studio?
Currently I am making a new drawing with charcoal and dry pastel. I do a whole series of such works. I got tired of oil painting. I have been in my house in Tenerife for two months and apparently this atmosphere made me go back to charcoal and dry pastel. I publish all my works on Instagram: janusztworek.art. I have two studios - one in Poland in Krakow and the other in Tenerife.
What trait do you most admire in a work of art? What trait do you most despise?
What I admire most is everything that influences my subconscious. I feel it as a storm of emotions that I don't fully understand. Neither the technique nor the subject matter matters. What I despise most is exaggeration and flashy showiness.
What is your dream project?
To finally do something that I will be truly happy with. But then it would probably be the end of the point of further work
What advice would you give to your younger or older self?
Work as much as possible. Don't be discouraged by your own limitations.
